Useful information and technical access come first. Measure a defined sample of AI answers without promising control over rankings.
GEO and AEO describe work intended to help a business become easier to discover and understand in AI answers. The useful version starts with accurate information, an accessible website, and a clear way to measure what actually happens.
What do GEO and AEO mean?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. GEO stands for generative engine optimization. People often use the terms interchangeably when discussing AI search, although the systems, placements, and measures involved can differ. Neither term describes a guaranteed route into an answer.
In a practical engagement, the questions are more concrete: Can the platform access the page? Is the offer understandable? Is the information current and supported? Does the brand appear in a defined sample of relevant buyer questions?
Start with what platforms actually document.
Google’s current guidance emphasizes foundational SEO and useful content for its generative AI search experiences. It does not require a special schema type, an llms.txt file, or a particular writing formula. Clear headings and direct explanations help people navigate; they are not a secret ranking mechanism.
For ChatGPT search, OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler. Its search controls and GPTBot training controls are separate. Allowing a search crawler supports eligibility; it does not guarantee a citation or recommendation.
Make the business clear before publishing more.
Review your core offer pages. Explain what you provide, who it is for, the markets you serve, what is included, and how a customer takes the next step. Resolve conflicting product names, outdated prices, or inconsistent company information before adding another generic article.
Then add the evidence only your business can supply: a well-documented process, a genuine case study with appropriate permission, original product specifications, or a clear comparison based on facts. Cite external sources when the claim depends on them. Do not invent customers, test results, or statistics to fill a page.
Check technical access and page quality.
Important pages should be reachable through working internal links and should return the intended content. Check canonical URLs, redirects, page titles, mobile readability, and whether hosting or access controls block the visitors and crawlers you want to reach. A private preview cannot function as a publicly crawlable business website.
Use structured data that accurately represents visible content where relevant. It can describe the business or article, but adding markup is not a substitute for useful information, and it does not force an AI system to recommend a brand.
Measure a defined sample, then connect it to business outcomes.
Agree on the buyer questions, engines, market, and collection dates. Record mentions, cited sources, and competing brands separately. Save enough context to distinguish a changed answer from a changed monitoring method.
Review referral traffic and completed business actions as a separate layer. A mention without a click is different from a booked call. Improving one measure does not prove improvement in the other. Use repeated observations and business evidence to choose the next action.
What does the research establish?
The GEO paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, accepted at KDD 2024, introduced a framework and benchmark for evaluating visibility in generative answers. It found that outcomes varied by method and subject area. That is research evidence for a testable problem, not a universal guarantee for today’s commercial platforms.
Our recommendation is to improve a real information gap, document the change, and monitor again. Treat a positive pattern as evidence to investigate, rather than claiming that every improvement was caused by your latest edit.
A sensible first month.
- Define one brand, market, and set of buyer questions.
- Check access, core pages, and factual consistency.
- Document a baseline with the engine and collection dates.
- Improve one or two meaningful information gaps.
- Review visibility, referrals, and qualified outcomes separately.
That makes GEO and AEO part of a useful content and website program. It keeps the work grounded in customers, evidence, and decisions the business can act on.
