Save the exact wrong answer, trace the source, correct your own facts and relevant outside listings, verify crawler access, request recrawling where appropriate, and recheck a repeatable prompt set. Source updates and observed answer changes are separate milestones.
If an AI answer gets your business wrong, save the exact answer and its sources, identify where the bad fact lives, correct the source you control, and ask outside publishers to update theirs. Then check whether the corrected information becomes accessible and whether later answers change. There is no universal “remove this answer” button for ordinary brand facts, and no reliable promise that one edit will immediately change every model.
This workflow applies to errors such as an old address, a discontinued service, a wrong starting price, or a false claim about what a product includes. It is Grailstar's operational advice, grounded in OpenAI's crawler documentation, Google's guidance for AI features, and the search engines' current recrawl tools. Sources were checked October 19, 2026.
First, record what was actually wrong
Copy the prompt, full answer, exact false sentence, visible citations, platform, date, and relevant market or location. Save a screenshot or export for your internal record. Try the same buyer question a few times, with and without your brand name, to see whether the error is repeatable.
Do not assume a citation proves that one page caused the sentence. It is a lead to investigate. The answer may combine several sources, use older information, or state an unsupported inference. Open the cited pages and compare their wording with your current facts.
Classify the issue before assigning work:
| Observation | First place to check | Likely owner |
|---|---|---|
| Your own page still shows the old fact | Product, service, pricing, or contact page | Website owner |
| Your page is correct but a cited directory is wrong | The directory listing or publisher article | Listing owner or publisher |
| Search shows an old version of a corrected page | Crawl and indexing status | SEO or technical team |
| Sources are correct but the answer is still wrong | Repeated answer samples and platform feedback | Visibility analyst |
This table is a triage aid, not a claim that every AI system uses the same retrieval process.
Fix the source of truth on your own site
Put the correction on the page a customer would reasonably use to verify the claim. If a product no longer offers a feature, update the product page and help documentation. If a service area changed, update the service page, contact page, and location facts. Do not bury the correction in a new blog post while the old claim remains on the main page.
Use a direct statement: “Available in Michigan and Ohio” is easier to check than “Serving the Midwest.” Give the effective date when timing matters. Keep old URLs, redirects, canonical tags, and internal links consistent so people reach the current page.
Google says important content should be available in text, internal links should make pages discoverable, and structured data should match visible content. Its AI features guide describes these as ordinary Search fundamentals. Its structured-data guidance also warns against marking up information that is not visible to readers. Schema can clarify a page; it cannot make an outdated claim true.
Check whether the corrected page can be reached
Test the public URL without signing in. Confirm that it returns successfully, shows the revised text in the rendered page, and is not blocked by a login screen, firewall challenge, noindex directive, or the wrong canonical. Check a mobile view as well.
For ChatGPT search, OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler. Its documentation treats OAI-SearchBot access separately from GPTBot, which concerns potential model training. Allowing search crawling is a discovery decision, not a guarantee that ChatGPT will cite or repeat the corrected page. The same documentation distinguishes ChatGPT-User, which may fetch a page after a user action, from automatic search crawling.
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says a supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements for those features. A blocked or unindexed page needs technical attention before a fresh headline will help.
Correct the outside sources that matter
If an AI answer cites a review page, directory, trade article, partner profile, or marketplace listing with the old fact, update a profile you own or contact the publisher with a concise correction. Include the exact URL, the sentence to change, the current fact, and a public page that substantiates it. Make the publisher's job easy.
For example: “Your listing says our office is on Main Street. We moved to Oak Street in September. The current address is on our contact page here. Would you update the listing?” That is more effective than asking an editor to “improve our AI visibility.”
Prioritize sources already appearing in the wrong answers and sources customers use to make a decision. Grailstar's AI Digital PR work addresses credible outside coverage and accurate inclusion; it does not buy control over independent editorial pages.
Help search engines discover the update
After the corrected page is live, use Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool to request indexing for a small number of important URLs. Google says repeat requests for the same URL will not make crawling faster. A sitemap helps with larger sets of changed URLs.
For Bing, Bing Webmaster Tools describes IndexNow and manual URL submission as ways to notify it about changes. Submission supports discovery; it does not guarantee indexing or an immediate change to an AI answer. Use the tools for your own URLs, not as a way to force updates on a third-party publisher's site.
Keep a dated log of when the page changed, when recrawl was requested, and when outside sources were updated. Without that sequence, a later answer change is difficult to interpret.
Test the answer again without declaring victory too early
Run the original prompt set again on the same platforms and markets, then record the full answers and citations. Compare the false claim, the sources cited, and whether the corrected page is being used. Check again on a sensible cadence rather than refreshing a single chat until it says what you want.
Use three separate statuses: source corrected, search discovery confirmed, and answer corrected in observed tests. The first is under your control. The other two depend on each platform and may take time or vary by question. One correct answer does not prove that all future answers will be correct.
Our AI visibility measurement guide explains how to keep a repeatable prompt set and preserve the underlying responses. The GEO content audit checklist helps turn the source and page findings into assigned fixes.
A simple correction log
| Field | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Incorrect statement | “Brand X still offers Plan A” |
| Business fact | Plan A ended October 1; Plan B is current |
| Evidence | Current pricing page and dated customer notice |
| AI observation | Prompt, platform, location, answer, citation, date |
| Source work | Pricing page updated; partner listing contacted |
| Discovery work | URL inspected or submitted; result recorded |
| Follow-up | Same prompt set rerun and difference noted |
The example is fictional. It shows the record to keep, not a reported Grailstar client outcome.
What should you avoid?
Do not publish ten near-duplicate “correction” pages, add schema that contradicts visible copy, or manufacture third-party mentions. Do not treat a crawler setting as a ranking switch. Do not say the model was “fixed” because one answer improved.
If the issue is a materially harmful false statement, use the platform's available reporting route as well as correcting public sources. Keep the report precise and save evidence of what you submitted. Ordinary brand-fact corrections still need the underlying pages and listings to be accurate.
Where should a team start today?
Choose the one false claim most likely to change a buying decision. Capture the answer, trace its cited sources, correct your own page, and send a documented correction to the most relevant outside source. Then confirm that the corrected page is reachable and start a dated follow-up set.
Grailstar combines AI visibility tracking, GEO, and AI Digital PR to find these gaps and work on the right source. Start a conversation if you need a clear correction plan for your brand.
